Your Kingdom Come

IN THE PAST: Zechariah’s original audience was a group of people who needed to be reminded that ‘the Lord reigns’.  He was a priest and a prophet who prophesied to a people who had returned to the city of Jerusalem after many years in exile.  God had called the people to rebuild the temple, and initially they responded with great energy and urgency.

As they faced one problem after another, their zeal turned to apathy and the work on the temple ceased leaving them disappointed, discouraged and downtrodden. It was at this point that God sent Zechariah, whose name means “The Lord remembers”, to turn the people back to God and to the task that needed to be completed.  Zechariah proclaims a stirring message of hope and salvation that lifts the gaze of these  ex-captives and exiles – their King is coming!

IN THE PRESENT: Just like the people of Zachariah’s day, as we struggle with life and the stresses and strains of the world around us we can feel overwhelmed.  Is God really in control?  Does the Lord really ‘reign’ in the chaos we see around us?  When the job in hand gets tough, it is easy to give in to despondency, dejection and despair.  What we need is the assurance that what we do is important, that it has significance and that it is all part of a bigger plan.

Zechariah calls us to look beyond the immediate and lift our eyes to survey the horizon.  The storms may be raging around us but the dawn is approaching, our God reigns!  And when the dawn breaks into glorious day, “The Lord will be King over the whole earth.  On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name” (Zechariah 14:9). Your Kingdom come…..
